Discover the boves of Arras
Take part in this guided tour of the underground of the city of Arras
What if you spend your next holiday in the Pas-de-Calais? Don't miss the discovery of the boves of Arras!
A step into history
In the 20th century, the quarrymen of the region dug the boves to extract the chalk, a white limestone rock. It was the installation of a market above the quarries that made them abandon their project two centuries later.
The galleries are composed of 3 levels:
- The first level is 4 metres deep
- The second level is 4 metres lower, i.e. 8 metres deep
- The third and final level, representing the boves, is 12 metres deep.
Did you know? The boves allowed soldiers to take shelter during the Battle of Arras in the First World War.
A guided tourof the boves of Arras
The underground galleries have become a must-see excursion in the Hauts-de-France region, stretching for almost twenty kilometres under the cobblestones of Arras.
Since the 1980s, the Tourist Office has recognised the potential of the site and has created a tourist circuit by developing part of the boves in advance.
For 45 minutes, discover the history of the chalk quarries 12 metres below ground.
