In the footsteps of the painters of Artois

Following in the footsteps of the painters of Artois means exploring the unique artistic heritage of the Arras School.

Great names have shaped the history of art there, such as Constant Dutilleux, Charles Desavary, Alfred Robaut and Camille Corot.

Between bucolic landscapes and lyrical inspirations, discover the painting of this group of artists who left their mark on Artois in the 19th century.

The Arras School: from Constant Dutilleux to Alfred Robaut

The Arras School took off in 1847 thanks to the initiative of Constant Dutilleux, a renowned painter and printer from Arras.

The latter commissioned a work from Camille Corot, the famous master of romantic landscapes, at the Paris Salon. This meeting marked the beginning of a long artistic friendship.
Corot, seduced by the landscapes of Artois and the "light of the North", regularly stayed in Arras. For over 10 years, he produced over 150 works there.

Each of his visits sparked an artistic ferment among local painters, such as Charles Desavary and Alfred Robaut, who published a reference manual on Corot's work.
Corot's personality also influenced Dutilleux's students, including Gustave Collin, Xavier Dourlens and Désiré Dubois.

His influence even went beyond painting when he participated in the emergence of the cliché-verre. This process, invented in Arras, combined photography and engraving and became a new means of expression.
The subtle blend of graphic art and pictorial art illustrates the modernity of the Arras School, today celebrated for its pioneering role.

The places that inspired the painters of Artois

The painters of Artois found their inspiration in the Arras countryside, where they painted outdoors, in the manner of naturalists.
The northern light on the banks of the Scarpe occupies a central place in the work of artists and landscape painters.

The painting Bord de Scarpe, effet du matin by Constant Dutilleux, exhibited at the Musée des Beaux-Arts d’Arras, illustrates the beauty of the landscapes.
Also admire certain works such as:
  • Les bûcherons près d’Arras by Camille Corot;
  • Le peintre en plein air by Désiré Dubois;
  • Gatherer of wood by Jules Thepaut;
  • Chemin en forêt by Constant Dutilleux.
