What is a Heritage Village?
Being awarded the Heritage Village label is not a trivial matter. Indeed, to obtain this certification, each village must submit an unsolicited application to promote its cultural heritage.
The criteria for obtaining the label are as follows
- To be located in a rural environment
- To have a unique wealth: historical heritage, artistic attraction, memorial or remarkable landscapes
As soon as it has been awarded the label, the village must put up signs forming a tourist circuit so that nothing is missed.
Around Arras, you can count 17 villages classified as Heritage Villages, including Hermaville, Mont-Saint-Eloi, Pas-en-Artois, Croisilles and the village of Etrun, which we are going to discuss.
Visit Etrun, a village in Pas-de-Calais near your hotel in Arras
Just ten minutes by bike from your Best Western in Pas-de-Calais, you will love to discover the picturesque village of Etrun.
In the Pays d'Artois, it is considered to be one of the most beautiful places to explore.
Etrun is an ancient Gallic territory that originated long before Arras, under the name of "Camp Caesar". The Gauls settled here from 450 BC onwards.
However, the enigma is still present: Was Etrun originally a Roman camp or a Gallic fortress?
The village has a Gallo-Roman fortification which was built by the Romans and Julius Caesar is said in the books to have stayed there.
Your walk through the Heritage Village of Etrun will reveal the remains of these decades of history between nature trails and the town centre.
For the more courageous among you, the Sentier des 3 abbayes forms a 16 kilometre loop and passes through Etrun and other villages of yesteryear.
